Letter K

[info]rhiannonstone gave me the letter K.

In no particular order, my ten favorite K things:

  1. Knowledge — Too much might break up the rhyme.
  2. Kindergarten — Everything I needed to know, etc.
  3. Kundera, Milan — Unbearable Lightness of Being, life changing.
  4. Kisses — Some are better than others.
  5. Kale — I eat it, a lot. With blackeyed peas, crushed red pepper, and cider vinegar.
  6. Kramer — You just blew my mind.
  7. Kindness — I try.
  8. Kleenex — A teachable moment for why our common vocabulary shouldn't be proprietary.
  9. Knuth, Donald — LaTeX.
  10. Kill 'Em All — The amazingest of albums, but awful politics.

What did I forget? Or, want a letter? Leave a comment.

didn't know you liked metallica. and i agree, the unbearable lightness of being was amazing and so beautiful.

I do like Metallica, though not really any other "metal" these days, and really only that album most of the time. Have you read The Joke?

i haven't read the joke, but i've read a bunch of his other books. the one chapter i loved in the book of laughter and forgetting is litost. i also really loved ignorance. i think that watching my parents return to china after moving to the states and the reality of what china was and what their expectation of what china was has been incredibly moving for me. for me, returning to china was less poignant because i was too young to remember really living there as we moved to the states when i was just about 3 years old. living there for a year when i was 15 was an amazing experience though, but it highlighted that although i often felt like an immigrant in the states, i felt that even more so when i was in china. now, this is all the more complicated because i'm living in the uk and having to explain to people that i'm american (but where are you really from?) china.

I'd tell you that you should read The Joke but it's the only book that anyone has ever yelled at me for recommending to them. It's depressing. I haven't read Ignorance but I think I might... stories about home are interesting to me too, even though Midwest => Mountains => East Coast is not quite like US => China => US => UK :).

Hm, this post was about the Letter K, and now we have Ignorance, Joke, Kundera, Laughter/Litost. Coincidence?
