Red Line train tries to leave with doors still open

Here's the story behind the 6:27pm Red Line alert you might have received tonight. Except not really, because I have no idea what happened. All I know is that about 5 seconds after I got off the Braintree train at Downtown Crossing, the train started to pull away at an unusually high speed and lots of people were yelling STOP.

I looked back at the train — and the doors were still open.

They were definitely still open on the last car and I'm pretty sure they were open on other cars as well. People had been still trying to get on the train when it jerked away. It went over a third of the way down the platform before it stopped again. Probably almost halfway.

I hung around for a minute, but I was trying to catch a bus and no one seemed to be hurt, so I left. I'm looking forward to the explanation for this one. I mean what, foot slipped off the brake?

That was on the way back from Central after returning the first disc of Pushing Daisies — awesome show. On the way there from work, I saw a kid squeeze through the gate behind someone else without paying. This is a common occurrence but for some reason tonight it struck a nerve. I think the next kid I see do that is going to hear about it. Yes, getting crotchety, I know.

What did the alert say?

"Due to conductor incompetance at Downtown Crossing, the Red Line is experiencing 10-15 minute delays"?

"Disabled Train" -- which might be true. Seems like those trains probably aren't supposed to allow moving while the doors are open.

there's actually one person in teh front of the train operating the train, and there is someone in the middle car who operates opening and closing the door. so it sounds like there was probably a miscommunication somewhere there.

and i doubt the redline is sophisticated enough that it wouldn't move with the doors open.

This happening is probably my personal T Nightmare Scenario that hits the sweet spot between being scary and being plausible. Scary to think that it actually happened. Glad nobody was hurt.

(Other T Nightmare Scenarios include the Longfellow Bridge collapsing while I'm on a train, and an earthquake while we're underground.)

Yea I have that Longfellow Bridge worry about once a week while on the train. Usually accompanied with thoughts along the lines of "Which guy on this car would I most like to save me?"

Pushing Daisies is awesome. I got totally hooked after the first episode. Sorry, don't know anything about the train, but had to say that.

Yeah, best thing I've seen on TV in a long time. I'm hoping to watch more episodes this weekend. But I watched the pilot of Dead Like Me for the first time last night and it sucked, disappointing.

I got totally sucked into Fringe this season too. If you're into geek-related comedy, I highly recommend Big Bang Theory as well.

Cool, as I have no cable I don't keep up with much TV as it actually happens. I'm more of a get the DVD later kind of guy.

A lot of television shows are available online for free. This site seems to be the one I see advertised most frequently: http://www.fancast.com/

Hm, I think that does not work well in my browser. Requires flash maybe?

Could be, I haven't actually used the site, it's just been recommended by others and it seems to have Fringe episodes on it.
