Stripping iPhone notices from e-mails in Gnus

I'm not a fan of the iPhone, because of its proprietary software and Digital Restrictions Management (DRM).

Sometimes people e-mail me from iPhones, and so I see that little "Sent from my iPhone" note at the bottom of their messages.

While I would prefer that people change that note (if Apple allows them to do that) to say something like, "The iPhone is Defective by Design (http://defectivebydesign.org).", my second choice would be to just not see the note. Fortunately, in Gnus — my favorite free software e-mail client — it's easy to "wash" messages.

Today to my .gnus file I added:

(setq gnus-parameters
      '((".*"
        (banner . iphone))))

(setq gnus-article-banner-alist
      '((iphone . "\\(^Sent from my iPhone$\\)")))

Now I don't have to see those notes.

It _is_ possible (and fairly easy) to change or remove that default signature. What amazes me is how many people choose not to do so even after I tell them how, or offer to do it for them.

I don't see an advantage in removing the IPhone footer from my incoming mails.

An much nicer feature than removing this IPhone footer would be to set your own footer to "The iPhone is Defective by Design (http://defectivebydesign.org)" if you replay to a mail with the ""Sent from my iPhone". This way you can educate IPhone user. I don't see any benefits in just "closing my eyes". The right response can be much more powerful.

Well, it gives me a little more peace of mind :).

You're the second person to suggest adding a note when replying to iPhone mails -- I think I'll do that next.

I find the note useful; it lets me know that the message is sent with a small keyboard and awkward context switching.

Hmm.. Sounds like a whole category of notices waiting to be deployed then :). "Sent from the bar," for example -- to let you know that the message is sent with a foggy brain in a dim room.

svn log |egrep -i 'drunk' has certainly helped explain things before...

at any rate, I think the iphone message is at least as informational than advertisement.
